After a year and a half of debate over the group\u2019s proposal\u2014made in collaboration with the Free Voters\u2014to plant trees on the market square, the City Council reached a consensus in 2023 on four out of five possible locations. On the City of Karlsruhe\u2019s website, a visualization already impressively shows how vibrant and inviting the market square will look once trees are finally growing there. At the time, the City Council did not want to commit to a specific date for implementation.<br\/>\u200b<br\/>In a recent inquiry at City Hall, City Councilmember Friedemann Kalmbach (F\u00dcR Karlsruhe) followed up with the administration to find out when the project would finally move forward. The good news: Planting is definitely planned as soon as the current renovation work on the surrounding buildings is completed. However, the renovation of the Technical City Hall will continue until mid-2027.<br\/>\u200b<br\/>\u201cIt\u2019s good that the planning is moving forward, clearing the way for the trees to be planted as soon as possible,\u201d said Friedemann Kalmbach. \u201cThe hot summers in particular clearly show us all how urgently Karlsruhe needs shaded, pleasant spaces in the city center. We won\u2019t let up on this issue and will continue to work with all our might to make our market square greener and more livable. Better sooner than later.\u201d<br\/>\u200b<br\/>However, the F\u00dcR Karlsruhe office is also emphasizing the urgency\u2014due to the hotter summers\u2014of planting these shade-providing trees quickly. Thus, while the planners\u2019 arguments against planting trees yet due to the adjacent construction sites are understandable, the fact that trees are already on the market square would not hinder future renovations of adjacent buildings.
