The city council group “Freie Wähler” and the voter group “FÜR Karlsruhe” have submitted a supplementary motion to Karlsruhe City Council for a social square concept. The situation in public squares such as Werderplatz in Südstadt has come to a head. The aim of the proposal is to reduce the burden on busy places in Karlsruhe by distributing social support services such as substitution clinics and food banks across different areas of the city. This is intended to weaken the pull effect: Over-concentration of help services in Südstadt has previously attracted withdrawal patients and homeless people from other parts of the city and the surrounding area. Conflicts intensified, the police and KOD had to respond several times and residents felt increasingly uncomfortable.
“A better and fairer distribution of social services across the entire city area is absolutely necessary in order to reduce the potential for conflict and improve the quality of life for residents. We see the new concept as an opportunity to strengthen the sense of security and the quality of life for citizens,” emphasized parliamentary group leader Friedemann Kalmbach (FÜR Karlsruhe).
The signatories of the motion, City Councillor Friedemann Kalmbach (FÜR Karlsruhe), City Councillor Jürgen Wenzel (Freie Wähler) and City Councillor Petra Lorenz (Freie Wähler) as well as group executive Micha Schlittenhardt, are convinced that a balanced distribution of social services will help to strengthen the city’s districts and promote positive coexistence.
