Do school children have enough opportunities to exercise? This question is posed by the city council group Freie Wähler and FÜR Karlsruhe to the city administration.

According to media reports, the Emotikon study in Potsdam and the WHO, children and young people in particular are becoming less physically active. As a result, physical inactivity has become a serious problem. In order to counteract this problem, the Free Voters and FÜR Karlsruhe city council group in the Karlsruhe City Council has submitted a request for an inventory analysis of the lack of exercise among children.

The group wants to know about the state of sports infrastructure and support in Karlsruhe and what measures the city can take to promote more physical activity.
In particular, the group is interested in whether regular physical education classes at Karlsruhe schools can take place in full with the current hall situation and the availability of sports fields and swimming pools, or whether there is a gap in demand. Also, they would like to find out if the staffing situation in school and swim sports is adequately staffed with qualified teaching personnel and how many hours were lost in school and swim sports last school year.
In addition, the conditions in the halls, athletics fields and stadiums will also be investigated. The group wants to find out whether these are in good condition and adequately equipped for school sports, which courts and halls this does not apply to, and which halls and sports facilities are in planning or already under construction.

“With our request, we would like to initiate a solution-oriented debate about ways to promote physical activity for our children and young people and find solutions on how the city can have a supportive impact on sporting activity. The goal is to give our children and young people a healthy future through more physical activity,” explains City Councilor Friedemann Kalmbach about the push.
