The city council group “Freie Wähler” and “FÜR Karlsruhe” have submitted a request to the administration to rely more on mobile greenery when planning and implementing measures to shade Kaiserstraße. They are reacting to the administration’s response to a request from the SPD municipal council group to use parasols instead of innovative shading solutions. They also draw attention to an approach in Frankfurt am Main in which fast-growing hanging plants on poles provide cooling and shade. These can then be harvested as biomass in the summer.

“We need to adapt our cities to the challenges of climate change and green infrastructure plays a crucial role in this,” says Petra Lorenz, a member of the city council group. “Mobile greenery offers the advantage that it can be used flexibly and adapted as required.” Friedemann Kalmbach adds: “In contrast to umbrellas, which only provide shade, green elements can have a positive influence on the microclimate. The evaporation of water through the leaves of the plants cools the ambient air and increases the humidity, which can lead to a noticeable improvement in the microclimate.”

The group calls on the administration to focus more on mobile greenery when planning and implementing measures to shade Kaiserstraße and to develop and examine corresponding concepts.
