FÜR Karlsruhe has submitted a supplementary motion to the municipal council on the use of the accommodation tax (“City Tax”) for the 2029 World Games. The aim of the motion is to earmark part of the revenue from the tax to finance the international sporting event that will take place in Karlsruhe in 2029.
“The 2029 World Games represent a great opportunity for the city and offer the chance to benefit both economically and in terms of international reputation. They could provide a positive impetus for tourism, sport and urban development and contribute to a sense of unity in the city’s society. At the same time, the financial challenges of staging the event should not be underestimated. In view of the commitment already made to host the World Games, it is virtually impossible to withdraw, which is why viable financing models are required. Proportionate use of the revenue from the new accommodation tax is a good idea, as it is borne by visitors to the city who also benefit from the international appeal of the event,” explains City Councillor Friedemann Kalmbach (FOR Karlsruhe).
With the integration of the overnight tax, FÜR Karlsruhe is pursuing the goal of placing the financing of the World Games on a broader basis and relieving the burden on the city’s budget. The city administration is to submit a draft resolution to the municipal council within the next six months, specifying the amount and duration of the financial contribution.
