In order to save energy, the city administration decided to replace the Karlsruhe ice skating rink, which is set up in front of the Karlsruhe Castle during the winter months, with a roller skating rink.
As an alternative proposal, the Free Voters and FÜR Karlsruhe city council group brought a synthetic ice skating rink into the conversation as early as 2019. This ice skating rink would be a unique purchase that saves electricity and energy while still providing the popular feeling of skating. Also, the synthetic ice surface can be used outside the cold season.
Rejected the proposal of the city council group on the grounds of the city administration that a synthetic ice rink can not be compared with real ice and is not environmentally friendly – and then opted for a roller skating rink made of plastic.
Now the Free Voters and FOR Karlsruhe are making an inquiry to take stock of the roller skating rink and compare it with a rink made of synthetic ice:
Would a roller rink have continued to be usable during snowfall, rain, or ice?
Which is more environmentally friendly – a synthetic roller rink or synthetic ice?
In order to find the best solution for Karlsruhe, both systems should be compared in terms of environmental friendliness, economic efficiency and attractiveness for the citizens – The city administration has a responsibility.
