Item 16, submission 2022/1068 Sycamore trees in Kaiserstraße

The market square will be planted with five hackberry trees or other climate-resistant trees in raised beds at the three access points to the bus stops and on the east side (according to the verified positions and implementation of submission 2019/0878, attachment 2)

Reason
Considering the climatic changes, the lack of shade and the added value of trees for the microclimate, trees are also essential for the marketplace and have long ceased to be a taboo subject. Unfortunately, at the December 10, 2019 council meeting, the council agreed to “forgo trees for now.” Subsequent summers clearly showed that this was initially an oversight. The local council has the chance to have trees planted now on the possible sites that have already been examined.

In April 2022, our group addressed the responsible department in this regard in an open letter. The response stated that the City of Karlsruhe submitted a “City Transformation” grant application in February for the “Sustainable City Centers and Downtowns” project to promote innovative concepts to strengthen resilience and crisis management in cities and towns, which includes shading elements in the marketplace. The city has now received the decision on inclusion in the program.
