The company “Knettenbrech + Gurdulic” has been responsible for emptying the recycling garbage cans since January – previously this was the task of the city. While the city was generous when it came to collecting the garbage, the company now responsible works exactly to measure, as the garbage is only taken away if the distance from the refuse vehicle to the garbage can is a maximum of 15 meters. If the distance is further than 15 meters, a fee of up to 140 euros will be charged.

The city had drawn up the specifications for waste collection to an external service provider and then put this out to tender and must now also accept this responsibility.

“We see the fact that this was not clearly communicated to the citizens as a missed opportunity. It is understandable that the company works according to their specifications. To avoid resentment because the waste is not collected, it must be communicated transparently in advance,” says Petra Lorenz (Free Voters) on the waste problem.

Friedemann Kalmbach (FÜR Karlsruhe) adds:
“For many citizens, this means a deterioration; in residential situations, such as apartments in old buildings, it is not easy to comply with the 15-meter rule. In view of these problems, we have spoken out in favor of retaining the red garbage can and the previous regulations.”
