3. how many trees have been felled by the City of Karlsruhe since the 2021 update of the climate adaptation strategy?
4. how many felling operations are currently planned in Karlsruhe for the coming years up to 2030?
5. how many new plantings have been implemented or planned from 2021 to 2030?
Reason
Climate adaptation is an important building block in the face of climate change. This is moreover clearly reflected in the will expressed by the citizenry for more trees and shading in the City Survey 2022. Trees play a major role in the microclimate, as well as providing shade and cooling on hot days.
The first question aims to determine the number of trees felled between the introduction of the climate adaptation strategy in 2013 and the update in 2021. The second question relates to the number of trees planted in the same period in order to assess the measures taken to restore the tree population. The third question focuses on the number of trees felled from the 2021 update to assess current practices and their impact on the tree population. The fourth question aims to obtain an overview of the felling already planned up to 2030 and to ensure appropriate measures to minimize the loss of trees. The fifth question concerns the implementation and planning of new tree planting from 2021 to 2030 and its importance for the restoration of the tree population, the desired increase in green spaces, shading and for a better microclimate and cooling of the city.
Answering these questions will help us to gain a better insight into tree felling and the measures taken to restore the tree population in Karlsruhe. It is essential that we take appropriate steps to improve the urban climate and enhance people’s quality of life in view of the increasing number of hot days and the population’s growing need for more greenery in our city.
